Welcome to the Farmily, little Miss Piggy!

We welcomed “Ruthie” (Now “Ginsburg”) to our farm-ily on Friday, November 20th. She is a 4 month old calico piglet who likely escaped a small farm, much to her luck, and was saved by Tommy’s Transport Team and Only Sunshine Sanctuary in Sacramento.

Hello, Ginsburg!

Meet the highway piglet, and our newest resident!

There had been reports of a small pig crisscrossing a busy highway in Sacramento county that had been resting behind an apartment complex where the neighbors would feed her food scraps. She had traveled miles over many days, supposedly learning traffic patterns in order to safely cross the freeway! This ruthless, brave piglet did what she must in order to survive. Apparently, Animal Control had been contacted numerous times but would not rescue her, so luckily some local vegan rescuers stepped in and were able to trap her.

Finally captured! But the struggle didn’t end there. The trap door didn’t end up closing, so they had to try again! Luckily, the next try was a success! Credit: Only Sunshine Sanctuary.

She spent a month’s quarantine at Only Sunshine Sanctuary in Sacramento. There, she received a spay surgery and skin mite treatment. It is extremely important for female pigs to be spayed, as their risk of cancer is high when they are intact.

We were notified that she would be arriving quite soon without much more time to prepare, so we had our handyman build a nice enclosure for her. We converted a used liquid storage tote into a kennel for her.

We had lots of totes to collect rainwater in. They make for a nice shelter in a pinch!

On the day of her arrival, she was greeted with lots of attention and affection. She is a beautiful piglet with calico coloring, and though she is still as small as a puppy, she will grow to be 600-700 lbs! She’s frisky, hyper-active, and very clever. This bundle of energy will keep us and all the other residents on our toes!

We had considered a few different names. “Ruth” was suggested in honor of the late RBG, but we weren’t set on it - until we landed on Ginsburg. It’s an unusual first name, but we think it suits her unique self and pays homage to RBG.
